COVID-19 & Vitamin D Connection

Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin is very important to prevention and only having mild Covid symptoms. It is well documented that those with a vitamin d level of under 15 on blood test have severe Covid symptoms. Those with a blood level of 15-30, moderate Covid symptoms. Over 30, mild symptoms.

82% of African Americans in the United States are vitamin D deficient (under 30), and 63% of Latinos are deficient. The darker our skin is (I am an olive complected Greek) the less we absorb vitamin D. However light skinned people should not be in the sun due to higher skin cancer risk. Therefore whether our skin is dark or light we all need at least 5,000u of vitamin D3 daily.

In my practice I have my patients achieve a vitamin D level of 70-100. This is the recommendation of the American Academy of Anti-aging Medicine.

You should know that a vitamin D level of 53 has a 75% reduction of all cancers combined. For Covid a blood level or daily intake has not been established yet. The general medical community has determined 30-100 to be the normal range. In my practice we strive for optimal rather than normal.

At least 6 of my patients in with vitamin D in the optimal range, Covid went through their households and they did not get it. I am not promising this it is just an observation. Others had mild symptoms for only a few days with optimal vitamin D levels.
